Young Women at Work Day 2009 - Bouygues UK introduces Tower Hamlets Girls Schools to range of careers in construction

On Wednesday 4th March, as part of Young Women at Work Day 2009, Bouygues UK hosted six female Year 9 pupils from two Tower Hamlets’ girls schools to highlight the range of career opportunities available to women in construction.

The event was a joint initiative between Tower Hamlets Council and the Primary Care Trust and aims to provide young women with the opportunity to learn about the range of job opportunities available locally, particularly in areas in which women are traditionally under-represented. This is the scheme’s second year following the success of its launch in 2008.

Three pupils from Mulberry Secondary School in Shadwell and three pupils from Central Foundation Girls School in Mile End visited Bouygues UK’s Waterloo Head Office where they met a range of female employees to illustrate the breadth of roles being undertaken by women there. This included; Deputy Director of Engineering Catherine Toron, Senior Project Manager Masume Hidayatullah and Quality & Environment Manager Sylvie Vulin.

The introductions were followed by an overview of Bouygues UK’s £240 million BSF programme for Tower Hamlets Council, before the group headed to one of the first schools in the borough to benefit from the programme - Bethnal Green Technology College in Mile End. Here the girls received a tour of the school from Sylvie Vulin where the part rebuild and part refurbishment works have just commenced.

Speaking of the event, Bouygues UK Managing Director Lionel Christolomme said:

“As well as transforming education in Tower Hamlets, the BSF programme will bring lots of jobs to the area so this was a fantastic opportunity to show young women from the borough the variety of different roles in construction and the number of those roles being carried out by women.

“We are working in close partnership with the Authority to provide job opportunities and apprenticeships to the residents of Tower Hamlets and, with our long history of workforce diversity, we hope that these opportunities will be equally attractive to both men and women.”
